Volunteers arriving at the Botanic Gardens this morning were shocked to see the damage caused by the cyclonic winds that lashed the Hunter overnight.

While damage to buildings and equipment is still being assessed, hundreds of beautiful trees have been blown over or had their branches snapped.

Regrettably, it has been necessary to close the Gardens to the public until the pathways and grounds have been made safe.
